Disability Awareness Workshops

Think differently
Changing attitudes and behaviour towards disabled people

This workshop is designed to introduce and explore information about people with disabilities, increase awareness of disability culture and encourage a basic understanding of the barriers preventing people with disabilities from full participation in society.

In 2013, 24% of the New Zealand population identified as being disabled, a total of 1.1 million people.  By increasing awareness and improving accessibility we are laying the foundation for building inclusive communities and achieving equality for disabled people.

Working together through this programme will create opportunities to rethink ideas about disability, shift perceptions about disabled people and encourage creative and effective designs for inclusive services.

In this workshop participants will:

  • Explore what disability means and how living with a disability affects those in our lives and the community as a whole
  • Hear lived experiences of what it is like to live with a disability
  • Experience first-hand what it is like to navigate your own work environment with a physical disability
  • Explore opportunities to make your workplace more accessible

Feedback from workshop participants:

‘Taught me to focus on the person, not the disability’
‘Spending a short time trying to complete tasks without my usual abilities was very enlightening’
‘Raised my awareness and respect’
